Edward Street Hostel is a voluntary organisation which provides, shelter accommodation, care, support, training and a positive future for homeless and other socially excluded and marginalised groups. Established in October 1982, Edward Street Hostel has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Today Edward Street Hostel Ltd employs 32 staff and has a wide range of support services for single homeless and other socially excluded groups. We have three residential projects in Portadown, ranging from a direct access hostel to semi-independent flats and two residential projects in Armagh called Linen Court.We have a Floating Support scheme, which provides support for 16 to 25 year olds enabling them to acquire and maintain accommodation with the community.
Through Key 2 Resource Centre, training in a wide range of essential life skills is provided for all our service users and other agencies.
We have been in existence for Twenty-Five years and look forward to meeting the challenges of the next Twenty Five.
As part of the BBC's Homeless Awareness Programme they requested to interview the service users of both Armagh and Portadown Hostels to give a real life insight into the issues and problems they face on a daily basis that many people are unaware of. it is a moving life story of the of everyday people that for one reason or another find themselves homless. Its is well worth a listen, and big thank you must be given to the service users who kindly parcipitated to talk about their lives so openly, to help give us a better insight into homelessness and the issues and stigmas surrounding it.
